Founded June 5, 2004, in Greensboro, the Cumberland County Progressives are composed of a broad array of grassroots activists. Mobilized by the Dennis Kucinich and Howard Dean campaigns in 2004, the CCP members are dedicated political educators as well as civil rights and civil issues advocates.

What is a Progressive?
According to David Sirota, author and political strategist, "liberals" in our current parlance are those who focus on using taxpayer money to help better society."Progressives are those who focus on using government power to make large institutions play by a set of rules."
